The Jekyll Island Beach Music Festival has been going for over 25 years and has hosted acts as different as the Beach Boys to the Tams. Last year representatives of the Carolina Beach Music Association attended, and they were amazed that such a great party could happen south of Myrtle Beach. They said that the greatest bands in beach music would literally stand in line for the opportunity to play down here.
Shag Dancing, Beach & Boogie
Great Bands bring Great Times, the Shaggers hear about it and want to come too. This is why the Jekyll Island Authority who run the festival decided to get the Shag community involved. Fun Monday at the Fall Migration of SOS is acknowledged as a great party, but not everyone from Georgia, Alabama and Florida can make the trip, so we all decided to put on the best beach party south of North Myrtle Beach - bar none.
The "Beach Blast" free party is on the beach Saturday afternoon. Either side are the Friday and Saturday night performances in the Jekyll Island Convention Center In all there will 7 great performances from the best in the business. The beach can hold as many people who want to come, the bandstand, and audio systems will support crowds of over 5000, 8000, 10000 ... The Atlantic Hall in the convention center can hold 1500 - 2500 people depending on how many table ans seats are provided, and has staging and a superb terrazzo floor for dancing. The convention center is directly right behind the dunes at the beach. In fact all the venues of the festival are within easy walking diastance of each other, with no more than 700-800 yards between things.
Last year as a part of thee festival a BBQ cook-off was held. The contestants from all over the SE brought big rigs, fancy cookers and worked through the night cooking with their secret recipes and ingredients. The judging was held and then the BBQ went on sale to everyone. Everyone needs to eat to keep up their strength for the next event. This year it will happen again, hosted in the brand new Great Dunes Park and Beach Pavillion.
Workshops ~ Learn to Shag thru Advanced
Not everyone can Shag Dance, and many men think their two left feet impair them. It is not two left feet it is the left side of the brain getting in the way saying, "You might look foolish out there at your age, learning to dance". Rubbish - pay $10 and we bet we can teach you the basic shag steps, we have even taught Dentist's to Dance. If you already shag then the intermediate workshops are for you, taught by instructors who will give exhibitions during the evening concerts. We are not all about Shag, we have been known to Line Dance, Two Step and even do Country Cha-Cha's. So come an join people who dance and party along with the occasional Adult Beverage or two.
