Ziggy's ~ Golden Isles Shag Club
Ziggy Mahoney’s is the main dance and night club on St Simons Island in Georgia. It has recently moved from the Red Barn to its own facility in the Retreat Village shopping center. Those of you with Lear Jets or Gulf Streams can land right across the road from Ziggy’s at the McKinnon St Simons Island Airport, and have a pleasant 3 minute stroll to the Club. Tuesday night is Shag Night, when we dance to our club DJ Wayne Bennett. Many people arrive about 6:30 to 7:00 for a meal, and by 8:00 the floor is pretty full. Those who cannot get enough Shaggin’ in will still arrive before 7:00 and get right to dancing. Wayne who is ever attentive to dancer’s needs always watches the floor to make sure that the tempo and mix is really right for his people.
On Friday nights Wayne plays a wider mix and the dancing is not purely shag, a line dance, and maybe a country Cha-Cha might be seen happening on the floor. Friday is a big night at Ziggy's for the younger crowd who turn out in force around 10:00 to listen to Keenan who plays many crowd favorites.
Ziggy’s as it’s locally known offers excellent Bar Food and the widest array of Adult Beverages to be found on St Simons. The dance floor is polished urethane coated wood and has sufficient size to hold 40 to 50 Shagger’s who stay in the slot, but when those who Ying Yang take the floor, the number can reduce considerably.
