While some music and dance historians trace the shag’s origins as far back as Africa and Western Europe, the Carolina shag can trace is shallowest roots to the southern U.S. during the Big Band era of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Originally influenced by the Charleston, Collegiate Shag, Jitterbug and Swing, today’s dance bears little resemblance to its supposed predecessors.
